Active Sound Localization or ASL is one of the key basis technologies now being developed in Lizard technology.
ASL is based on many years of research at the University of Southern Denmark in the hearing characteristics and dynamics of lizards, frogs and insects.
The key component of the ASL technology is the mathematical modelling of the lizard ear - we call it the lizard ear model.
The model is based on neuro-morphic engineering of the lizard ear. The lizard is a highly direc-tional device. Directionality and neural processing of the lizard ear can be modelled by an electric circuit.
We have developed a prototype robot based on the characteristics of the lizard ear and the pro-cessing. Simulation in a digital signal processor show excellent sound localization behaviour. At the left you see the first robot prototype with lizard-like ears, and the latest prototype with an ASL based sensor system to localize the direction and distance of sound signals in air and under water.
